Fixture weekends announced for 19-20 Greene King IPA Championship

Grab your diary! The fixture weekends for the 2019-20 Greene King IPA Championship and Championship Cup season have been announced.

Nottingham host Yorkshire Carnegie in the first round of the Championship Cup to kick off their campaign on the weekend of 20 September, while Neil Fowkes’ men will travel to newly-promoted Ampthill for the first game of the Greene King IPA Championship on the weekend of 11 October.

The RFU Championship Cup, taking place for the second time, will open the season’s fixtures with the first games taking place on 20 September.

As in its inaugural season, teams will be split into three pools, playing across six rounds with the pool stage fixtures all completed before Christmas. The top two teams from each pool together with the two best runners up across the three pools will all proceed to the quarter-finals which will be followed by the semi-finals and a final which will take place in May next year.

Pool 1 comprises of Ampthill, Bedford Blues, Coventry and Ealing Trailfinders in Pool 2 Doncaster Knights will face Hartpury, Jersey Reds and Newcastle Falcons while Cornish Pirates, London Scottish, Nottingham and Yorkshire Carnegie will form Pool 3.

Greene King IPA championship chairman Geoff Irvine commenting on the new season said: “We’re delighted to welcome Newcastle Falcons and Ampthill to the 11th season of the Greene King IPA Championship.

“The Championship continues to thrive and we look forward to another highly competitive season starting in two months’ time.”

RFU director of professional rugby Nigel Melville added: “We’re all looking forward to the upcoming season and the fixtures coming out will provide a focus for clubs as they start to prepare for their first games.

“Last season produced some fantastic performances and we’re all looking forward to more great rugby next season,” added Melville.
