New to Nottingham Rugby this year, Jon Vickers has
already made quite an impression with his aggressive,
uncompromising style of play, as well as displaying some fleeting
footwork for the Sky TV cameras last month.
The quality of Vickers is no surprise, in his first full season
with Plymouth Albion he was voted Player of the Season. The award
becomes all the more impressive when you realise this was Vickers'
first full season of regular games playing as a hooker.
A couple of seasons ago he made the switch from prop to hooker
but limited chances to play, at previous club Exeter Chiefs, meant
that last season was his first chance to get a run of regular games
in his new position.
Vickers recalls playing in the Premiership whilst at Northampton
as a young tight head prop, "I came off the bench for Northampton
against Leicester and that was a great experience. But I was
getting limited game time and eventually decided to make the switch
"Due to a neck injury though, it wasn't until last season that I
played regularly at hooker for a full season. That was down at
Plymouth and I really enjoyed my time there, I loved it."
Having been snapped up in the summer by Martin Haag, Vickers has
enjoyed the start of the season, describing playing games as being
much more enjoyable than pre-season training, "Pre-season was tough
and very hard work. I heard that Jo Brun, the strength and
conditioning coach, was very good but also that his training was
"It's great to be playing games now and although we've had a
difficult start to the season after a great win away at Leeds, you
have to remember that the Championship is now an extremely
competitive league. On their day any team has the ability to beat
anyone in this league."
Speaking about switching to the Green and Whites of Nottingham,
Vickers said, "I wanted to improve my game to the next level, I
heard about the professionalism of Martin Haag and that was a major
factor for me in signing this summer."
