THE legend that fuels Nottingham's rivalry with Doncaster comes to life at Meadow Lane Stadium on Sunday (3pm kick-off).

For the first time, the Robin Hood Shield goes on the line between two cities that lay claim to the prince of the thieves' folklore.

It is a piece of silverware that is near and dear to Nottingham Rugby hearts, a club that carriers the archer as a crest on its chest, and plays in the colours that Robin Hood made infamous when he stalked Sherwood Forest.

The South Yorkshire RFU Championship side, on the other hand, are quick to point out that they have the Robin Hood Airport in their backyard in homage to the outlaw.

Getting into the spirit of the occasion, Green and Whites players James Arlidge, Tim Streather and newboy Shaun Malton slipped into their finest Lincoln green tights to make a stand by Robin Hood himself.

"We all know there is a modern movement by those in Yorkshire to claim Robin Hood," Arlidge said.

"I'm happy to spearhead the debate and take it to the Knights. A little more spice to the battle is always welcome, and this is hundreds of years of history that we are playing for here."

True to the occasion, the Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Merlita Bryan, will be a special guest at Sunday's match and will present the winning captain with the shield after the match.

Nottingham Rugby is also running a twitter competition in celebration of the legend.
