Brave Nottingham Pipped by Munster

Nottingham Rugby battled bravely but ultimately ran out of steam against a determined Munster team in the British and Irish Cup and ended up losing 30-15 in Ireland.

Nottingham Vs Munster

The Green and Whites held their own against a strong Munster team for the vast majority of the match which was played out by two very physical sides.

A long break due to an injury to Tom Price seemed to take some of the wind out of the Nottingham sails and Munster eventually made their pressure tell with two further tries.

While defeat, coupled with Plymouth's comprehensive victory over Stirling County means that Nottingham's interest in this season's competition is now over but the coaching staff will have taken a lot of positives from a performance that was vastly superior to that on display against Ealing the previous weekend.

Neil Fowkes' men certainly got their pride back and performances such as this offer a real glimmer of hope for the remainder of the Championship season.

A much-improved performance from Nottingham was not enough to see them make progress in the British and Irish Cup.

Their 30-15 defeat at Munster ended their interest in this season's competition, but their performance will have provided a welcome confidence boost after that league defeat at the hands of Ealing a week earlier.

In a particularly physical game the Green and Whites matched a strong Munster side, but could not get over the try line.

Five penalties from Matt Jarvis kept them in touch, but a late try from Gerhard van den Heever, his second of the game, gave the home side a bonus point, and effectively ended any hopes Nottingham may have had of causing an upset.

Johnny Holland gave Munster an early lead with a penalty, only to see that lead wipoed as Jarvis slotted over his first of the evening.

The opening try came on 16 minutes when Ivan Dineen beat a couple of tackles as he broke down the middle before sending Denis Hurley clear to touch down under the posts. Holland made it 10-3 with the conversion.

A stray pass from Nottingham then allowed van den Heever in for his first try, Holland off target with his conversion attempt.

Jarvis was in good kicking form though, adding a couple of penalties late in the first half to make it 15-12, then levelling the scores in the opening minutes of the second half.

There was a lengthy stoppage though following a worrying injury to Nottingham second row Tom Price, who had to be stretchered from the field,

This seemed to unsettle Nottingham for a while, and Munster took advantage, forcing a penalty for Holland to make it 18-15, followed by a try from Ronan O'Mahoney as he chased a kick through and got to the ball first. Holland made it 25-15 with the conversion.

But Nottingham fought well, and it was injury time before the home side finally put the game beyond them with a last gasp try from van den Heever to secure a bonus point which leaves them still in with a chance of overtaking Plymouth Albion at the top of the Pool 4 table.
