Lady Bay All Set For Nottingham Rugby Against Leicester Tigers

Nottingham Rugby get their pre-season campaign underway tomorrow (16th August) when they welcome Aviva Premiership giants, and East Midlands neighbours, Leicester Tigers to Lady Bay Sports Ground.

The Green and Whites have been back in training since 9th June, putting plenty of hard work to get ready for the season ahead.

Nottingham Head Coach Martin Haag is pleased with how things have been progressing and said, "It's been a good pre-season so far with the team showing a great appetite for the conditioning work as they look to get into the best possible shape.  We've got a lot of new players who have had to get up to speed with the way we do things and I've been impressed with how they've all settled in.

"Even though training has been excellent, there is no substitute for playing matches and developing that match hardness from competitive rugby.  It's a good opportunity for the players to put things we've been working on into practice against one of the best teams in Europe.  We'll be looking to learn a few things and keep improving week on week as we get ready for Bedford."

Nottingham have picked up a few injuries during pre-season, with this match coming a bit too soon for some of those recovering.

Haag continued, "As is always the case in pre-season, a few of the lads have sustained injuries which will rule them out of this match.  The positive for us is that the majority of those injured are still on track to be available for the final pre-season match against Coventry and then Bedford.

"We obviously don't want to rush people back too early, so this match is a great opportunity for some of the other players to test themselves against a great side and put themselves in contention for the league campaign."

The Leicester Tigers have had eight players with the England squad training camp this week but there are still some very experienced players around the squad.

Fiji international Seremaia Bai, who moved to Leicester after eight years in France with Clermont Auvergne and Castres, will be keen to gain gametime for his new club while other new faces at the club include Christian Loamanu, Robert Barbieri, Samoan prop Aniseko Sio and former Championship back-rower Laurence Pearce, who will all want an opportunity to impress team mates and supporters in their new surroundings.

Those who had an injury-affected campaign in 2013/14 will also be given the chance to push on again, including scrum half Sam Harrison and centre Matt Smith who had a spell with Nottingham earlier in his career. Javiah Pohe, who made his Tigers senior debut last season, is another with recent experience in Nottingham colours who will want to make a big impression in the new season.

Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill is also likely to use the first of the pre-season outings to look at some of the younger members of the squad who have come through the Tigers Academy and assess their work alongside more senior colleagues.
