Haag Reflects on Bedford

Nottingham Rugby Head Coach Martin Haag has been reflecting on the recent 14-9 defeat away to Bedford in the Greene King IPA Championship.

Haag saw his team battle it out in torrential conditions and come away with a well deserved losing bonus point.

He said, "We don't like losing and we mustn't be happy with losing.  We felt that we could go there and win and we were hugely competitive.

"I thought some of the elements that we've been working on in training began to work in the game a bit more.  There are some elements that aren't quite there yet, but I thought in the first half in particular, some of our attack was really good; we got good gain line and good quick ball and put them under pressure.  We had a couple of opportunities in the first half which we didn't take from five metres out from their line which may well have changed the game.

"In the second half I thought we showed a lot of grit and a lot of determination.  At times the skill levels let us down, but I was really pleased with people like Rory Lynn, Perry Humphreys and Alfie Molloy playing their first games, plus young Ryan Hough on the other wing, so we had a very young and very inexperienced back three and they were put under a lot of pressure.

"There was some good kicking from Bedford and they got some territory but I was really pleased with the character, we dug deep and ended up getting a bonus point."

Haag is also pleased with the diminishing injury list that he has to contend with as he looks to welcome back three key first team players.

He continued, "We're getting people back, which is good.  Jon Vickers is hopefully going to be back on Friday, Rupert Cooper is not far away and Joe Cobden had his first training session today.  He's still four to five weeks away but it's a great opportunity for those guys to come back and add something.

"It'll create some competition for places and it'll freshen the lads up a bit as well.  We have been under the cosh and we have been short of numbers, but the team spirit is there which is good, so there's a real opportunity for those guys when they come back to really add to the squad."

Nottingham returns to Championship action against London Scottish on Friday (31st January) at Meadow Lane.  Tickets are available by calling the office on 0115 9070070.
