Bristol 33 vs Nottingham 18 - Match Report

First Half Blitz Boosts Bristol

Full match report by ANDI STARR

A vastly improved second half performance from Nottingham was not enough to prevent them slipping to a sixth straight defeat, beaten 33-18 at Bristol.

Bristol NEW

The home side put together an impressive performance over the first half, running in four tries to secure a bonus point.

But the Green and Whites were below par in that first period, and although they stepped up a gear or two, and tightened up their defence, after the break they wasted scoring chances that could have put Bristol under more pressure.

They started well enough, taking the lead with a Matt Jarvis penalty, but Bristol grabbed their first try within minutes as winger George Watkins supported a blindside break from Marco Mama for an easy try. Tristan Roberts converted to give his side a 7-3 lead.

A Jarvis penalty came back off the woodwork before an early wasted chance cost them dearly, Bristol grabbing their second try of the game minutes later as Watkins ran in his second from halfway. Roberts made it 14-3 with a straightforward conversion.

Jarvis put a second penalty over, before Tom Calladine grabbed a try for Nottingham from a lineout midway inside the home 22 to make it 14-11.

But within four minutes Bristol cancelled out that score when Ben Mosses squeezed in for an unconverted try just before the half hour.

The bonus point try came from a scrum deep inside their own half, Watkins and Ruki Tipuna broke away before sending Roberts in for the score, which he converted to make it 26-11 at the break.

Before that half time whistle though Nottingham found themselves a man short as prop Campese Ma'afu was rather harshly yellow-carded.

While he was off the field Bristol grabbed their fifth try from a quickly taken penalty, Roberts crossing for his second and then adding the conversion to make it 33-11.

But the Green and Whites' defence was much more effective over the final half hour, and that proved to be Bristol's final score of the day.

Alex Shaw grabbed a try for the Green and Whites, which Jarvis converted, but they will be disappointed with a first half performance that left them with too much to do.
